Forecasters have issued multiple yellow weather warnings as cold air continues to affect large parts of the United Kingdom.
The Met Office placed Northern Ireland under a yellow alert for rain and snow early Wednesday. Southern parts of England are also under a yellow warning for heavy rain.
Later today, snow warnings will extend across parts of Wales, the Midlands, and the southern Pennines. An ice warning will also take effect in Wales during the evening.
Temperatures Drop Below Freezing
Northwesterly winds have pushed colder air across the country in recent days. Temperatures fell below -9°C in parts of northeast Scotland overnight. Many northern and central areas woke up to widespread frost.
Clouds have thickened from the south and west. Rain has already moved into Northern Ireland, Wales, and southern England. Snow has begun to fall over higher ground.
The UK Health Security Agency has issued a cold weather alert for most of England until 18:00 GMT on Friday. Officials warn that low temperatures could increase health risks, particularly for older people and vulnerable groups.
Heavy Rain Raises Flood Risk
Northern Ireland will see persistent rain at lower levels throughout Wednesday. Snow will continue to fall over higher areas, especially in the Sperrins. Wind gusts between 45 and 55 mph may create hazardous travel conditions.
Southern England faces the risk of intense rainfall. Some areas could receive between 30 and 50 millimeters. Saturated ground may struggle to absorb more water, increasing the risk of flooding.
Around 60 flood warnings remain active. Authorities expect that number could rise if heavy rain continues.
Snow Likely Over Higher Ground
Rain will spread north into Wales, the West Midlands, and northern England later in the day. Colder air may turn some of that rain into snow, especially above 150 to 200 meters.
Forecasters expect several centimeters of accumulation in elevated areas. The highest ground in mid and southeast Wales, Herefordshire, Shropshire, and the southern Pennines could see up to 15 centimeters.
Lower areas will likely experience a mix of rain and sleet. Brief periods of wet snow remain possible.
Travel Disruption Possible Overnight
Drivers may face difficult conditions on Wednesday evening and overnight. Snow and freezing temperatures could affect untreated roads. Strong winds may also cause isolated power outages.
Snow may extend into the Peak District, the Pennines, and parts of southwest Scotland overnight. Forecasters continue to monitor the situation as conditions develop.
Milder Weather Likely by the Weekend
We do not expect the recent cold spell to last much longer. Temperatures are likely to rise slightly as the weekend draws nearer, bringing some welcome relief after several days of biting cold across the country.
Even with milder weather on the way, authorities are encouraging people to keep an eye on official forecasts and take extra care when travelling until all weather warnings have been lifted.
