Nine people have been killed and at least 25 others injured in a mass shooting in the small community of Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, according to Canadian police.

Authorities said the suspect was also found dead at the scene. The gunfire unfolded at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School and also at a nearby residence, resulting in multiple deaths and numerous injuries. Police told residents to stay inside while emergency crews rushed to the scene.

What Happened

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said officers received reports of an active shooter at approximately 1:20 p.m. local time on Tuesday.

Police immediately issued an emergency alert, asking residents to stay indoors and make sure their homes were locked. Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, along with a nearby elementary school, was placed under lockdown as a precaution.

Provincial officials said police reached the secondary school within minutes of receiving the first call reporting gunfire. Authorities believe the rapid response may have prevented further casualties.

Tumbler Ridge is a rural community of about 2,400 residents. The secondary school serves roughly 160 students in grades 7 through 12.

Investigators confirmed that multiple victims were found inside the school building. Several people died at the scene, while others were transported to the hospital for treatment.

Approximately 25 others were treated at a local medical centre for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Authorities have not yet released the names or ages of those killed.

Investigation Underway

Police confirmed they have identified the suspect but have not publicly released further details. The suspect was found dead inside the school, and authorities say it appears they took their own life.

Authorities are investigating what may have prompted the attack and whether the suspect had any connection to the school or its students.

They have asked people not to speculate and said updates will be shared only once details are confirmed.
